NH Curriculum Standards for

CAREER LEARNING

Purpose – The major goal of Career Learning is to prepare students to take responsibility for their own futures. Through career learning, students will be better able to take advantage of workplace opportunities and adapt to changing needs of local, national, and international economies. Through better recognition of individual abilities and how they relate to the world of work, students will acquire skills necessary for adult life. Career Learning helps students to better understand themselves and their world as they progress through the educational environment and transition to adult life.

K-12 Career Development Curriculum Framework New Hampshire

NH Career Development Curriculum Standard 6: Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes and skills to make a successful transition from school to the world of work and adult life.

  1. Will participate in teacher and curriculum designed activities in the areas of general work knowledge: why people work, community workers and career clusters.
  • Demonstrate an awareness and knowledge of the work of family members, school personnel and community workers
  • Describe jobs that are present in the community or region.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how work is important to all people.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of career clusters and career ladders.
  • Use media and technology to identify a variety of occupations. (end of 4th)

2. Will complete activities in the area of exploring personal interests, values, skills, and abilities related to employment and file work in vocational notebook for reference.

  • Use interest inventories to identify a number of occupational groups for exploration.
  • Describe the importance of individual characteristics in getting and keeping a job.
  • Explore the educational requirements of various occupations.
  • Make decisions and set appropriate career goals- end of 8th
  • Demonstrate the use of a range of resources to gather information about careers. End of 10th
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how occupational skills and knowledge can be acquired through leisure activities. End of 12th
  • Explain how employment opportunities relate to education and training. End of 12th

NH Curriculum Standard 7: Students will understand the relationship between individual qualities, education and training, and the world of work.

  1. Will complete a variety of real work tasks to explore and evaluate vocational potential in the areas of work skills, abilities and behavior.
  • Apply employability and job readiness skills to internship, mentoring, shadowing and/or other world-of-work related experiences.
  • Evaluate the relationship between their individual interests, abilities, and skills and achieving individual, social, educational, and career goals.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of safety standards to work setting.- end of 10th
  • Apply job readiness skills to seek employment opportunities - end of 12th

2. Will demonstrate appropriate work habits by attaining at least 80% accuracy on the Work Behavior Rating Form

  • Apply employability and job readiness skills to internship, mentoring, shadowing and/or other world-of-work related experiences.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of safety standards to work setting .

3. Will participate in basic work tasks with staff assistance as needed to complete the task.

  • Apply employability and job readiness skills to internship, mentoring, shadowing and/or other world-of-work related experiences.- end of 12th

School to Work-Transition Program Goals and Objectives

General goals for School to Work
__________ will acquire the knowledge, attitudes ( work behaviors) and skills to make a successful transition from school to the world of work, demonstrated by completing assessments with at least 80% accuracy.

In preparation for the transition from school to work _______ will complete activities in the areas of self awareness ( recognizing skills, abilities and interests), social skills/work behaviors, job seeking skills and beginning level money management with at least ____% accuracy when measured.

_______will demonstrate understanding of the ways in which work, family, citizenship, and leisure roles are interrelated by completing teacher designed assessments with at least 80% accuracy

______will increase his vocational readiness by developing and demonstrating appropriate work behaviors, specific work related skills and basic knowledge of the world of work, demonstrated by completing assessments with at least 80% accuracy and/or staff satisfaction
 
 __________ will participate in one or more of the following methods of obtaining pre-vocational/vocational training: in school work experiences, job try outs, on the job training, vocational education classes, job shadowing and/or volunteer experiences.

______will improve attention to task, accuracy, and/or appropriate work behavior through selected activities over baseline in these areas.
 

 Self Awareness

______ will complete 3 or more interest, abilities, skills, work environment, and work values inventories to explore and assess personal preferences related to vocational choices.

_____ will improve functional communication skills by using augmentive communication,  voice and facial expression for answering yes/no questions while constructing, with staff assistance, a self awareness "About Me" notebook that will include information and pictures about personal likes and dislikes, things and people she is interested in and other relevant personal information.

 Work Behaviors/Social Skills

 ______ will demonstrate knowledge and application of the following work related personal and social skills: self awareness, personal appearance, punctuality and attendance, good worker character traits, communication skills, interacting with supervisors and co-workers with at least ______ accuracy on teacher and curriculum activities.


Basic Money Management

____________ will be introduced to forms required for work: W-4, paychecks, W-2, and 1040EZ, and will complete assignments involving these forms with at least _______ accuracy.

Using information generated from paycheck math activities ( i.e.. Monthly income) _______ will generate a monthly budget to include rent, food, clothing, utilities, transportation, insurance, savings etc., with at least_____% accuracy on calculations and or reasonable distribution of income.

____ will demonstrate the ability to set short term, intermediate and long term money goals by generating a list of at least three financial goals and stating ___ ( number) of ways to accomplish these goals ( banking, budgeting, avoiding impulse buying, comparison shopping).

Job  Searching skills

_____ will complete forms associated with job seeking skills, including filling out job application forms, listing references and resume preparation.

_____ will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of at least 5 important considerations in the job interviewing process. (ie. punctuality, appearance, polite greetings, honesty in communication, asking questions, showing interest, sending follow-up thank you letter...) through role playing practice and real employment opportunities as available.

Job Awareness

 _____  will complete steps required to organize a job shadowing experience based on their identified vocational interests with teacher assistance as needed.
_____ will identify the roles and duties of at least 4 school and community workers per quarter with at least 80% accuracy on comprehension questions.

Work Behavior

_____ will participate in work experiences and will maintain at least a satisfactory level on the Work Behavior Rating form. ( qualify with amount of time and level of work experience)


_____will increase independence on assigned tasks, demonstrated by utilizing picture/symbol/sign cues to initiate elements of a tasks that are illustrated on a job task card or in a teacher designed task booklets
